The Mental Health (Criminal Law) Review Board reviews the detention of patients in designated centres who are detained under the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act 2006, as amended by the Criminal Law (Insanity) Act 2010. Currently the Central Mental Hospital is the only designated centre where patients are detained.
When reviewing the detention of patients, the Board can order their continued detention in the Central Mental Hospital or their conditional or unconditional discharge.
When reviewing the detention of a person who has been transferred from prison to the Central Mental Hospital, the Board can order their continued detention in the hospital or their return to prison.
